The Less You Know

The Less You Know

How I’m learning to be a stay-at-home dad with a photography degree

Good shoes and great advice.

Over at Magnum Photos there is some great advice for photographers, from photographers.  They are asked what got them excited about photography and what advice they would give to young photographers.  I really enjoyed most of the advice like this from Alex Webb.

“Photograph because you love doing it, because you absolutely have to do it, because the chief reward is going to be the process of doing it. Other rewards — recognition, financial remuneration — come to so few and are so fleeting. And even if you are somewhat successful, there will almost inevitably be stretches of time when you will be ignored, have little income, or — often — both. Certainly there are many other easier ways to make a living in this society. Take photography on as a passion, not a career.”

This too, from Thomas Hoepker.

“Avoid all photo schools and courses. Most will give you lofty ideas and twist your mind in one direction. Find your own way to photography, nobody will ask you later if you have a diploma. Visit as many museums as you possibly can. The images you see (painted, drawn, etched or photographed) will stay with you for the rest of your life. They will help you to discover good pictures in real life. Suppress any silly ambitions of becoming a great artist. Being a good photographer is difficult enough.”

American Suburb.

This site has some really outstanding images, along with very unique shots of children.  My favorites are the projects entitled Hero, Creep, X and Veil.  I usually don’t like sites that have music with there images but it really seems to work here… check it out.

Free Darko

Do you remember Darko Milicic?

A few years back the Pistons head coach Larry Brown would keep the diffident Darko from doing anything on the basketball court.  But the fans wanted to see him play, they needed to see him play.  They put out petitions… I mean, these people were serious.  But he never saw any real playtime and he was eventually traded away to some team I can’t even remember.  Ah well…

I’m a pretty big NBA fan.  I love the Pistons… and I hate them too.  It’s a fast paced, exciting game.  It’s a game that frustrates me one day and by the next I’m a fan all over again.

I like it.

But what does this have to do with photography?  Well, not all that much.  It has more to do with this book I want to own and its amazing designs and illustrations.  The title is  FreeDarko presents: The Macrophenomenal Pro Basketball Almanac: Styles, Stats, and Stars in Today’s Game.  I found this over at NOTCOT… you should also check out the FreeDarko website.

Now, check some of these illustrations out!

Now read some of these pages…

Maybe some exceedingly attractive young woman will want to get this for me on Christmas?  Huh… *wink, wink* *nod, nod*

Where I’ve been.

Over the past few weeks you may have noticed that I haven’t been blogging.  There’s a few reasons for that.  First of all, I’ve been keeping busy with a few different things.  I was asked to do some senior portraits for someone and have a few more in the works.  I’ve also been busy with a new college course and going through some family issues.  But the biggest thing that’s been keeping me away from blogging is the major overhaul of my website

I basically give you two options from the opening splash screen, either Commercial or Fine Art.  I’ve really felt the need to seperate the two but haven’t had enough motivation or focus until recently.  With the Commercial section I provide not only senior portraits but engagement, newborn, children, maternity and family as well.  I also have been making some good strides with stock images and I’m planning on having more about stock news in this here blog for not only you, but for keeping myself up to date as well.

What would David Hockney think?

I vaguely remember my History of Photography as an Art instructor teaching us about David Hockney. He seemed absolutely enthralled with this particular artist.  And obviously, this guy was creating some groundbreaking stuff that was new and original for its time.  But nowadays, everything’s changing.

Check out Photosynth.  All you need is a good amount of photo’s from a particular area and this software creates a Hockneyesque style canvas.  It basically, “examines images for similarities to each other and uses that information to estimate the shape of the subject and the vantage point the photos were taken from.”

Check out this video:

UPDATE: My new blog Other Things May Change Us is moving to another site to make it easier on myself (uploading images, the overall look, etc.).  So please, bear with me.  You can find it now but there is currently only one image.
